- Acrostic puzzles are short quotations or text paragraphs that
- read from left to right, top to bottom. The text is plotted into
- a rectangular grid, one letter per square, with spaces
- represented as black squares. All punctuation marks such as
- commas, periods, and so forth, are eliminated. The letters of the
- quotation or text are then randomly re-organized into a number of
- unrelated words or short phrases. Each of these words or short
- phrases is given a definition.
-
- Acrostics are solved by figuring out the definitions and filling
- in the answers. Printed acrostics have the definition answer
- letters keyed to corresponding squares in the quotation diagram
- so the solver can transpose the definition answer letters to the
- quotation. With ENIGMACROSS, this transposition is done for you.
-
- As more letters are transposed to the diagram, individual words
- of the quotation become apparent and can be completed. In the
- same way, letters from the diagram are transposed to the
- definition answer words, aiding in their solution.
-
- By working back and forth, between the diagram and the answers to
- the definitions, the puzzle is thus completed.
-
- When solved, the first letter of each definition word, in order,
- spells out the author and source of the quotation.
